Color Freedom Pet Portrait Mosaic workshop (3-day class) with Donna Van Hooser

Date: Jan 31-Feb 2, 2025 - Friday, Saturday & Sunday
**DEADLINE to submit your photo: Friday - Jan.  4, 2025**
Skill Level: intermediate or advanced
Hours: 10am – 5pm with a lunch break
Materials included: All materials provided for subject only.  Materials for background are not included.
Minimum # of students: 4

Description: In this class we will select glass colors using greyscale values rather than traditional colors to create form and expression in creating a mosaic portrait. Precision cutting techniques will be covered, as well as andamento, glass selection and shading.

Since this technique is more time consuming, a finished portrait is not expected at the end of the
three day workshop, however the eyes and a portion of the face can be completed, depending on the experience of each student. This workshop is intended for intermediate or advanced mosaic artists, and should not be used as an introduction to making mosaics.

Students can either work on a black and white photo provided by the instructor, or can provide a
PHOTO prior to the class (deadline to submit photo: Oct 4). Photos provided by the students must be high resolution showing good detail (not out of focus) and have fairly strong contrast between values.

Please do not convert color photos to black and white prior to submitting them, or apply filters.

The instructor will map out the design before the class if using a photo supplied by the student
prior to the class.

Materials are provided, including a12x12 or 11x14 prepared substrate with photo and
drawing, carbon paper to transfer, stained glass, glue, and the loan of various tools to use during the workshop. Glass is provided for subject only.  Glass or tile for background is not included.

During the workshop, while there is a bit of instruction addressed to the entire class (cutting,
andamento, and discussion of values/tones) I would say that 90% of the class is one-on-one instruction and assistance with andamento and glass selection. While the portraits won’t be finished in the three days, the goal is to have the students leave with the confidence to complete their projects on their own.

An email is sent to students about a month or so prior to the class requesting the photos to be
prepared and providing guidelines for the photographs. A follow up email is sent closer to the time of the workshop with a tools list for the students to bring. The instructor will have a limited number of tools available for students to use as well.

**DEADLINE to submit your photo: Friday - October 4, 2024**

I love working in mosaic, especially dealing with the challenges and limitations of the materials. The glass must be carefully chosen from a limited palette, since colors cannot be mixed, and each piece must serve as an individual brush stroke working in harmony with the surrounding pieces.
