Rendering Real Randomly before Flippin’ Unglued Mosaic Workshop with Solly
Date: Nov. 7-11, 2022
Skill Level: all levels
Hours: 10am - 4pm
Materials included: 12 x 16 inch Laticrete hydroban board with hanging hardware, 12 x 16 inch clear sheet glass, stained glass and adhesive
Materials you bring: 2-wheeled glass-cutters, safety glasses, tweezers (Luna Mosaic Arts does have a few pairs of tweezers and wheeled glass cutters available to use and for sale), and a camera for work with values.
Minimum # of students: 8
Join Solly in a 5-day workshop. Step outside your comfort zone to explore his approach to creating a mosaic wall hanging with a high degree of realism from the apparently random placement of glass pieces and employing his signature double reverse technique. Most students will finish a 12 x 16 x 1 inch mosaic, and Solly will discuss options for framing. There will be no grouting during the workshop, although students may elect to do so in their own studios. If there is enough time remaining after their mosaics have been adhered to a substrate by the morning of day 4, then students may choose to layer glass for highlights, outlines, details, changes to problem areas, texture and virtual depth.
Solly will work with students through creative blocks and advise how to deal with difficult or troublesome areas. He will stress the importance of tonal contrast, tesserae size and shape variation and letting the work take on a life of its own.
In this workshop you will work from an image provided by Solly, This way we can make sure the glass you need for that image is available. If you would like to bring your own image, please make sure to bring your own glass. You will be able to use the glass and scrap glass provided, but the colors you may want, may not be available. There is glass available at Luna Mosaic Arts for sale and there is a stained glass store next door that you can also purchase glass from in case you need specific colors that aren’t available.
With the ever changing CDC rules, Mask policy will be determined at the time of the workshop.
Our refund policy still stands as is (see below) even if you get COVID or you have to quarantine from being around someone who has COVID. Please do not attend if you are not feeling well or have COVID-19.
About the Instructor: John Sollinger
I am a mosaic artist and educator, who is based in Ashland, Oregon, USA. I produce glass mosaic wall hangings that depict intimate botanical scenes or native landscapes and wildflowers of the western US, often with elements of fire or water and the absence of humans.
I have been awarded top accolades in international competitions in mosaics, glass, and all-media competitions. I have had the honor to exhibit and speak at mosaic conferences in Europe, Australia, and USA. My mosaics have been featured in popular press and coffee-table books, trade journals, art magazines and advertisements for art competitions and organizations.
I served as artist-in-residence at Crater Lake National Park, Uroboros Glass, and Olive Stack's Fine Art Gallery. I teach workshops on my unusual techniques, and in that space I reveal my double reverse method and approach to depicting realism through chaos.
