Description:

This workshop is great for people who would like to create custom glass items to be incorporated into their mosaic work. Freeze casting is a technique that expands on the Freeze and Fuse and Pate de Verre process, that produces glass castings that can be large or small and are highly detailed. Traditional Pate de Verre is a kiln casting technique that uses a one-time plaster mold that gives the project a sugary porous texture. We will be using a technique in which glass powders are packed into silicone or plastic molds, frozen, and fired in the kiln, resulting in pieces that are intricate and shiny. In this class, you will make small and large fused glass elements with lots of color and detail, that can be incorporated into a mosaic, another fused glass project or used for jewelry. We will provide glow pigments that can be added to the powders to make the pieces glow, such as a glow-in-the-dark sugar skull. The larger projects are packed with fiber material that forms a mold resulting in a light weight and hollow piece after it is fired. You will have the opportunity to make several flowers, skulls, butterflies, and other creatures from the molds. You are encouraged to bring your own fondant or candy molds

About the Instructor: Wesley Wong

www.glasstastique.com

Wesley has had an interest in art since he was young.  He took many art classes in high  school and college, but graduated from University of California at Santa Barbara with a  degree in computer science. He took a stained glass class in the early 1980s from a  local stained glass shop owner and discovered that stained glass was the ideal medium  for his creative juices. This eventually lead him into mosaics and fused glass. His work features lots of bright colors and intricate patterns and has been exhibited in many  juried glass and mosaic shows throughout the United States. After 34 years in the high  technology world, Wesley took an early retirement to focus on his passion for glass art. Wesley has had the opportunity to be trained by many master mosaic artists including  Laurel True, Emma Biggs, Lynne Chinn, and Martin Cheek.

Wesley enjoys sharing his glass knowledge with other artists and teaches glass workshops through his studio, at the Stained Glass Garden in Berkeley, CA., and at the annual  glass expo in Las Vegas. Wesley is a regular contributor to the Glass Patterns Quarterly  magazine, and is a member of the Association of Stained Glass Lamp Artists (ASGLA),  Society of American Mosaic Artists (SAMA), and Contemporary Mosaic Artists (CMA).
