Since this technique is more time consuming, a finished portrait is not expected at the end of the three day workshop, however the eyes and a good portion of the face can be completed, depending on the experience of each student. This workshop is intended for intermediate or advanced mosaic artists, and should not be used as an introduction to making mosaics.
For the purposes of this class, students will choose from photos (one of the 9 black and white photos shown here) that the instructor has selected for expression, contrast and size of features.
The instructor will map out the design before the class if using a photo supplied by the student prior to the class. A phone with a camera is recommended, as we will be using this as a tool in class to see grayscale values.

About the Instructor: Donna Van Hooser
I love working in mosaic, especially dealing with the challenges and limitations of the materials. The glass must be carefully chosen from a limited palette, since colors cannot be mixed, and each piece must serve as an individual brush stroke working in harmony with the surrounding pieces.
